Alleged scammer arrested in Corio

A Corio man’s been arrested after a home was searched in relation to a scam.

It involved a phone scam of an 80-year-old which saw one-thousand dollars allegedly withdrawn from a bank account and nine-grand spent on electronics.

A search found multiple drivers licenses and bank cards from more than 50 victims.

“Officers executed the search warrant at a property on Kosciusko Avenue about 7am on 21 February,” police said in a statement.

“The search was part of an investigation into a phone scam involving an 80-year-old victim.

“Police searched the premises and located $16,000 in cash, identity documents (drivers licences and bank cards) belonging to more than 50 different people, numerous mobile phones, SIM cards and gift cards.

“Police arrested a 30-year-old Corio man at the scene.

“He has been charged with deception offences and possessing proceeds of crime.”

The man will head to court in April.
