Online retail giant Amazon is promising faster delivery speeds for its customers in and around Geelong following the opening of its new logistics site in Geelong.

The hub, at the former Ford site in Melbourne Road, will serve as a distribution point for Amazon packages and should help ease pressure on deliveries ahead of the busy festive season.

It is Amazon’s 12th logistics site in Australia and the first in regional Victoria.

Amazon’s logistics centres are part of the final stage of the delivery process. Packages are shipped to the site from the business’ fulfillment centres before being collected by Amazon Flex drivers for delivery to customers.

The company said the launch would provide additional jobs in Geelong, both in operations and as Amazon Flex delivery drivers.

Amazon Australia Logistics Country Leader, Tim Coventry, said local customers could now expect deliveries in as little as one day.

“We’re thrilled to be contributing to the Geelong local economy through the creation of jobs and flexible earning opportunities with our new logistics site, and look forward to being an active member of the community,” he said.

“Building infrastructure closer to where our customers live (also) enables us to deliver to them more efficiently.”

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said the logistics site could support a new generation of jobs and economic activity.

“Amazon’s arrival will accelerate the revitalisation of the precinct and is a clear signal to other investors that Geelong is a great place to do business,” said Cr Sullivan.

Amazon Flex allows drivers to work hours that suit them using their own vehicle. Details are available at flex.amazon.com.au.
