Detectives are asking for the people inside a car on the Geelong Ring Road prior to a tragic crash on Saturday night to come forward.
A ute and car collided in Lara around 11.20pm, with the 57-year-old female passenger in the ute killed at the scene.
The 67-year-old Grovedale man allegedly driving the ute was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.
The driver of the car, a 23-year-old Lara man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while his passenger, a 19-year-old Lovely Banks woman, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Detectives would like to speak with the occupants of a vehicle seen in the area just before the crash happened.
Investigators are also asking for anyone who may have information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
