“We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of people down on the beaches,” Dr Calverley said.

“Our message to people going to the beach is to make sure that they do go to the patrolled location.

“If the surf or the water is looking particularly rough, or if it’s out of your abilities, the best advice we have is to not get into the water at all.”

She said there were plenty of other ways to cool down if water conditions are dangerous.

“You might be better off going to one of our public pools, as well, that are a bit easier and a more controlled environment.”
