Former Premier Jeff Kennett has called on councils across Victoria to follow the City of Greater Geelong’s lead, by returning to acknowledging Australia Day on January 26.
Councillors voted 7-4 this week in favour of beginning the process of returning to the celebration of the date.
The motion was put forward by Cr Eddy Kontelj.

The former Liberal leader has praised the decision, saying he hopes others will follow suit.
However Melbourne Lord mayor Nick Reece says there are no plans for Melbourne to change its approach to the day.
