The state government is set to build 1,000 social homes across the state including in the Barwon region, while announcing a review into the infrastructure needs of the regional Victoria.
State Labor made the announcement late last week, revealing where the homes will be built as part of the $1-billion Regional Housing Fund.
238 homes will be built in the Barwon region, with other homes in areas including the Mallee, Wimmera South-West and Loddon regions.
Premier Jacinta Allan has also announced a group of key members of its housing affordability partnership will meet from next month to find a system that works across regional Victoria, with the group to report back in March next year.
The group forms part of a government review into the unique infrastructure needs of rural and regional Victoria.
Member for Polwarth and Shadow Housing Minister, Richard Riordan, said despite the announcement Labor is still not doing enough to house vulnerable locals.
“Despite Labor already spending billions of taxpayer dollars, Victoria’s social housing stock remains stagnant, public housing is going backwards and the waitlist of families looking for a roof over their heads continues to climb,” he said.
“The Allan Labor Government’s approach to the housing crisis is failing.
“More spending is not resulting in better outcomes for vulnerable Victorians.
“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage housing and Victorians are paying the price.”
