Concerning data reveals high number of suspensions at Geelong schools

New figures show that more than 87,800 students have been suspended from schools across Victoria over five years, with troubling numbers coming from Geelong-based schools.

Data revealed by the Herald Sun shows there were almost 891 suspensions at Northern Bay College between 2019 and 2023, the most of any local school and the ninth-highest in the state.

It included 216 suspensions in 2023 alone, while North Geelong Secondary saw 852 suspensions in the five years, the 11th most in Victoria.

Statewide the average amount of students suspended each school day sits at 87, which is an increase of 30 per cent since 2019.

Newcomb Secondary College saw 469 suspensions in the last five year, although the number decreased last year, with Geelong High School seeing just under 400 kids suspended.

Grovedale College was the other local school with over 300 student suspensions over the recorded period.

Mount Ridley P-12 College based in Craigieburn in Melbourne’s north had the highest number of suspensions in the state, with 1844 students suspended over the five years.
