There are calls for the winding up of key local lobby group G21 Geelong Region Alliance after the City of Greater Geelong decided to pull the pin.
The council announced it would be withdrawing its membership from the lobby group in April, 2024, saving the city more than $500,000 each year.
The bulk of G21’s funding comes from Geelong, and Liberal member for Western Victoria Bev McArthur said other local councils should be thinking about whether it was worth continuing.
“Geelong’s overflowing with groups that do advocacy,” Ms McArthur said.
“This one (G21) is funded by ratepayers – the other councils ought to be thinking twice about whether they continue their contribution.”
The local MP said the region was over-represented by organisations and would the region notice if G21 was abolished.
G21 has been approached for comment.
