A timber truss company’s been fined for over the death of a worker at a Point Cook construction site.
The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard the then 35-year-old man was struck in the face by a steel structure dislodged during the unloading of timber trusses in March 2020.
The impact caused the victim to fall backwards and hit his head on a concrete slab and he later died at the scene.
The court found his employer, Melbourne Truss Pty Ltd, could have reduced the risk to his health and safety be ensuring people were in a safe location when trusses were being shifted.
“Cranes and lifting equipment are an essential part of the daily work for many industries but work involving cranes is high risk and must be treated with the utmost care and caution,” WorkSafe Executive Director of Health and Safety Narelle Beer said.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder for every employer using cranes to ensure safety is the first priority each and every time a load is lifted.”
Melbourne Truss pleaded guilty and was fined $200,000.
