The Surf Coast Suns Football Netball Club could receive a significant funding boost under a new election promise.
Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan has announced $3.4 million for a new pavilion at the Suns’ Banyul-Warri Fields base if the Coalition is elected to power at the forthcoming Federal Election.
The funding would be timely for the fledgling club, with Surf Coast to enter teams in the Bellarine Football Netball League next year.
“They’re going to be the first (new) team entering the BFNL in 40 years, so we all really need to get behind them as a community,” Mr Dunstan said.
“We’re just really backing small clubs. Obviously, they’re a new club; they’ve been around for 10 years, and they’ve been advocating for this pavilion for five.”
Surf Coast started as a junior club in 2016, with their application to join the BFNL unanimously ratified by AFL Barwon at a May 2024 meeting.
“The Surf Coast Suns FNC has grown enormously in the last five years,” Suns president Jay Williams said.
This new sporting facility will support growth not only for us but other sporting clubs in Torquay.
“We have finally created a pathway for so many kids to play senior sport here.
“However, we now need the infrastructure to support this pathway.
“If this development gets up, it will benefit countless kids, families and senior players throughout the whole community.”
