The remains of a Geelong backpacker who went missing 23-years ago have been discovered in New South Wales.
Kellie Ann Carmichael was last seen leaving a hostel in the Blue Mountains in 2001, telling staff she would come back for her belongings.
A coronial inquest in 2009 ruled the 24-year-old had died, but could not determine how or when.
Officers were abseiling down a cliff during an unrelated operation in April when they spotted human remains, according to reports in NewsCorp.
Police were back at the scene last Monday, identifying the remains as those of Kellie Ann.
Her family has been notified, while a post mortem will be held to determine the cause of death.
