Geelong’s Breakwater showgrounds have been bathed in brilliant sunshine on the opening day of the Royal Geelong Show, with thousands of people taking advantage of the now-traditional free entry first day.

In stark contrast to the torrential rain that dampened opening day celebrations in 2022 this year’s crowds enjoyed perfect conditions, with the temperature peaking at 26C at 2.30pm.

Friday is expected to be even better, with more sunny weather and an expected top of 28.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said a day at the show is a perfect way to celebrate the city’s rural connections.

“It’s such an important part of celebrating our strong agricultural community and history,” said Cr Sullivan.

“I really encourage people to get out there, to engage in our rural communities that offer so much to our region.

“The Geelong Show is a fantastic way to be a part of it.”

Friday sees the start of the event’s evening program, with closing time pushed back to 10.30pm and the ever-popular fireworks set down for 8.45pm.

Today’s highlights include Monster Trucks at 12.15pm, 4.30pm and 8.15pm, a sheep dog demonstration at 7pm and, for the little ones, Meet Our Farmyard Friends which runs between 9.30am and 4pm.

The gates open at 9.30am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and while tickets are available on site, show organisers recommend purchasing them online to avoid queues.

$10 parking is available at the Breakwater Road.

A word of caution: drivers planning on taking their cars are urged to ensure any outstanding fines have been paid, to avoid having their vehicles clamped by sheriff’s officers who target the carpark and surrounding area every year.
