Groundbreaking Barwon Water project reaches important phase

Barwon Water is hoping to start construction of its groundbreaking organic waste project next year, with the initiative reaching an important phase.

The Regional Renewable Organics Network set to be based at the organisations Black Rock plant in Connewarre, will take food and garden waste and safely convert it into products from use in agribusiness.

The facility will also produce enough renewable energy to power around 1100 homes.

Magaing Director at Barwon Water, Shaun Cumming, said it is part of plans to transform the site to a circular economy hub for the region

“The next phase will see us conducting the detailed design for the initiative,” Mr. Cumming said.

“We’re also submitting approvals, which are EPA approvals and Council planning permit approvals,” he said.

“This next phase … will enable us to start construction next year.”

Mr. Cumming said Barwon Water will continue working with the community to get valuable feedback on the initiative moving forward.

“We have actively listened and learned about what matters most to our community members.

“To further strengthen this connection, we will be conducting a series of community information sessions across various locations, including central Geelong, Torquay, Bannockburn, Queenscliff, and Barwon Heads, from late October to mid-November.

“Additionally, we will provide an online session for those who are unable to attend in person.

“We look forward to engaging with the community and working together to shape a more sustainable future for our region.”
