Hundreds of mourners have packed into GMHBA Stadium on Friday morning to farewell Troy Selwood, following his tragic passing at just 40-years-old last week.

Troy’s brothers each delivered a heartfelt eulogy, with twin brother Adam speaking first, saying putting together his eulogy was the “hardest thing he’s ever had to do.”

“He loved looking after people, and I know he’d want us all to be looking after ourselves and each other as we navigate this difficult time of grief,” Adam said.

“Troy wasn’t just my twin, he was my best mate, he was my biggest competitor, he was my fiercest supporter.

“He was the person alongside my beautiful wife who knows me better than anyone and I’m the luckiest person in the world to have had that connection and support from him for so many years.”

Youngest brother Scott was next to speak, sharing treasured memories and joking about his and Troy’s shared role as a ‘tagger’ during their AFL playing days.

Scott shared a moment from the 2007 AFL season, where Troy was mistakenly awarded a Brownlow vote while playing for the Lions against Joel’s Cats.

Troy was given one vote for the match as a Geelong player, which saw the family group chat ‘light up’ that night.

“No matter how much bickering has been done in the Selwood family chat since 2007 over the matter, T. Selwood will always hold that one thoroughly deserved, and for some thoroughly annoying, and for many thoroughly debatable Brownlow vote,” Scott said.

“Troy, I love you and I will continue on your legacy forever, especially with your proudest and most brilliant achievement, your kids.”

Joel was last to speak of the trio, paying tribute and reassuring the Selwood parents of their support and positive influence on Troy’s life.

“We cant imagine your pain and we wont try to.

“I hope my boys love Brit and I as much as he loved you both.

“If Troy’s named popped up on his phone for one of those ‘quick 90-minute calls’ one last time, what would he say?

“Hey brother, just a quick one, I just want you to know how much you are loved and I want to thank you for everything.

“Thanks for the support and the guidance over the years.

“I am sorry you had to struggle so hard, thanks for fighting a long as you did.

“I hope you’re in a good spot now.

“Love you brother, speak soon.”

The Selwood family encouraged attendees to generously donate to mental health organisations such as the Black Dog Institute, Beyond Blue or Lifeline instead of offering gifts.

The service concluded with a guard of honour spread across the boundary line of Kardinia Park, before a wake for family and close friends.
