An investigation is underway into the discovery of a man’s body at Lara’s troubled Marngoneet Prison.
Police and paramedics were called to the Bacchus Marsh Road facility just before 7am on Monday after officers found the man unresponsive in his cell.
He was unable to be revived.
Corrections Victoria said Marngoneet staff and inmates would be provided with appropriate support.
Marngoneet, which opened in 2006, is a medium security facility that is adjacent to the maximum security Barwon Prison.
The Karreenga annex launched in 2016 and recorded four inmate deaths in its first ten months of operation.
One of those was Melbourne’s “hot chocolate rapist” Harry Barkas.
In 2019 a Marngoneet prisoner was flown to hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed by another inmate.
In 2020 former Marngoneet general manager Wayne Alan Harper, 58, pleaded guilty to five charges relating to the posession of child abuse material.
