Lifejackets will be mandatory at a rock fishing spot near Lorne, after a two-year trial looking at high-risk locations throughout the state.
It is now compulsory for people who throw a line in the water at Jump Rock to wear a compliant lifejacket of 50S or greater.
Children under 12 are required to wear a level 100 or greater lifejacket regardless of whether or not they are fishing.
Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said the trial results are still being evaluated and the results will determine longer-term arrangements for anglersl
“We know lifejackets save lives and we urge rock fishers to wear one no matter where they are right along the coast because no snapper is worth your life,” he said.
“The new and extended zones have been identified through the two-year trial and will be added to the high-risk locations, meaning these important rules remain in place while we review the data and consider preventative measures.
The addition of Jump Rock to a designated lifejacket zone follows earlier declarations already being in place for Artillery Rocks which is west of Lorne, and Sheoak Falls to the towns south.
