Roads across Geelong and the Surf Coast are expected to be busy over the next two weeks as people take advantage of the school holidays, with local police issuing a warning to road users.
Geelong’s Highway Patrol say they are anticipating a lot of visitors to come and enjoy the coast over the Grand Final public holiday on Friday in particular.
Sergeant David Brockway said police will be sure to have a visible presence on our roads in the lead up to the weekend and across the holiday period.
“Grand Final weekend being the first of the ‘warmish’ long weekends, we’ll be out in force targeting speed and those drink drivers in and around (Geelong) and especially the coast and the Bellarine,” he said.
“The Surf Coast and the Bellarine and things like that, they’re not going anywhere, so let’s be patient.
“Be respectful of other road users and make sure we get there safe.”
As of Tuesday morning, the number of lives lost on the states roads so far this year is 210, one death higher than the same time last year.
In 2023, 296 lives were lost which was the highest number of deaths in over 15 years, where the death toll on Victorian roads was at 303.
