Bev McArthur says monitors should not return to the City of Greater Geelong.

Peter Dorling and Mark Davies terms ended on December 31, and the member for Western Victoria says that should be the end of the positions in the town.

She says while they were once needed due to issues in the council, they are now no longer useful.

“Ratepayers are no longer in need of being fleeced for an extra layer of bureaucracy that simply does not add value,” she said.

“At a staggering $1,296 per day plus expenses—adding up to almost $110,000 in 2023 alone—this is an expense that is no longer justifiable nor acceptable.

“The lack of transparency surrounding the future of the monitors is as concerning as it is frustrating.

“Geelong deserves better than to be held hostage by political ambiguity and financial waste.”

Dorling and Davies were appointed in April of last year, with a previous group of monitors finishing their 12 month contract in January the same year.

At the time a report said the council had made progress, there was still work needed to improve governance policies, process and practices.
