Four men have been rescued from the water near Queenscliff after their fishing boat capsized.
They were all treated for minor injuries Friday afternoon, including mild hypothermia an ingesting seawater, and taken to Geelong University Hospital in a stable condition.
Search and rescue teams found one man clinging to the boat, while another was airlifted top safety by Air Ambulance crews after being spotted 500m away.
The two remaining men were rescued by boat and brought to the shore.
Of the four men, aged between 20 and 40 years old, only three were wearing life jackets.
Ambulance Victoria’s Senior Team Manager for Greater Geelong, Elli Dean, said this is an important reminder for locals and visitors to take care around the Surf Coast this summer.
“With warmer weather upon us, we urge everyone to prioritise safety when enjoying Victoria’s waterways,” Ms Dean said.
“We see a wide range of water-related incidents throughout the year, often caused by boating mishaps, water sports, fast-moving currents, or hidden hazards like rocks or debris. Taking preventative steps can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.”
The incident was witnessed by staff at the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, allowing emergency services to respond immediately.
“These men are incredibly fortunate to have been rescued safely,” Ms Dean said.
“Whether you’re planning to enter the water or not, always remain vigilant and prepared for unexpected situations.”
