New Year’s Eve revellers head to waterfront

Police have been pretty happy with the behaviour of New Year’s revellers across Geelong and the Surf Coast.

Thousands packed the waterfront to see in 2025, with fireworks at 9.30pm and midnight.

The was an extra police presence in the area as well as the Surf Coast, but officers reported no major incidents.

However, 23 weapons were seized during operations in Geelong, Melbourne and St Kilda.

Emergency services were also called to 52-assault related incidents across Victoria, including a stabbing in Sorrento, and another incident in Blairgowrie.

There were also a number of grassfires resulting from illegal fireworks.

Police are warning they will continue to be out on the roads New Year’s Day, with a particular focus on foreshores.

And Chad Henry from Life Saving Victoria urged people heading to local beaches to swim at patrolled locations between the flags.

“It’s critical that people look after themselves,” he said.

“.. they protect themselves by wearing appropriate clothing and they attend locations that are protected and patrolled by lifeguards to ensure their own safety.”
