Police crackdown on youth offenders

A police crackdown in Geelong and Melbourne will be targeting some of the state’s worst youth offenders.

New teams of officers will manage those with an extensive history of committing crimes, including burglaries, assaults and car thefts.

Police say there are two main objections – to stop further offending and provide support that encourages rehabilitation.

They admit they are frustrated at the number of people reoffending after being granted bail,.

The operation will also target recividist adult offenders.

It will expand into other areas of regional Victoria by next year.

Police say the move is not a new response to targeting repeat offenders, but there will be a consistent coordination that targets offences that keep happening.
