Police across the Surf Coast are preparing for the upcoming Schoolies season, despite declining numbers expected across the region.
Locals will see increased patrols in beachside communities, with police presence to be felt in particular around key venues, along waterways, and near accommodation hotspots.
Lorne Station Commander Sergeant Jonathan Parish says there “will be dedicated local operations in place for the duration of celebrations.”
“We know this will be a time of experimentation for many of the young people, especially with illicit substances. The health risks speak for themselves, however, I want to reiterate the consequences attached with becoming involve with drugs,” he says.
“In Victoria, being caught with as little as 3 grams of cocaine, MDMA, or amphetamines can be considered a trafficable quantity. This could impact your ability to get a job in the future, study, or even travel overseas.”
Police will be targeting major, minor, and back roads, looking out for speed, drink driving, phone use, and fatigue.
“For many school leavers this may be their first experience driving long distances at a speed or unfamiliar roads, so we ask you to plan your trips and also share with your friends so you can arrive and get home safely to family, he says.
The priority is making sure that everyone stays safe while celebrating this great achievement.
“Victoria Police congratulates all the students who have completed their final exams and bid farewell to school. It’s an exciting time for them and we want to congratulate each and every student,” he says.
“Keep an eye out for each other, and if you have any concerns seek help immediately.”
