It is the time of year students dread but parents love – back to school.

However drivers are being reminded to slow down before and after classes, and abide by the 40km/h speed limit.

Many public schools across Geelong and the Surf Coast will return today, while others and private schools will start their year later this week.

Police are warning of an increased presence in school zones, ensuring drivers are slowing down.

They are also encouraging motorists to lookout for crossing supervisors as they try to help kids get to and from school safely.

There is also the issue of children possibly running between cars onto the road.

State Highway Patrol Inspector Nichole Yin said they wanted people to take extra care.

“With kids heading back to school this week, we want everyone to take extra care when travelling around school zones,” Inspector Yin said.

“Children are amongst our most vulnerable road users. They’re less developed physically, cognitively and have less experience around traffic.

“We’re also asking parents, carers and teachers to talk to children about the importance of road safety and teach them to stop, look, listen and think when crossing the road.”
