The Royal Geelong Show has closed for Friday evening after wild weather swept across the region during the afternoon causing flash flooding.

A staggering amount of rain fell in Geelong within just an hour, with the Geelong Racecourse gauge recording over 50mm of rainfall between 3 and 4pm on Friday afternoon.

A watch and act message was re-issued just after 4pm, with locals told to prepare to take shelter.

Close to 100 incidents have been reported to emergency services for building damage and flooding, mostly in the Belmont and Grovedale areas, and those close to the Barwon River.

There was also several reports of flooding further north in Bannockburn and Lara earlier on in the afternoon.

The storm event has caused organisers for the Royal Geelong Show to pull the pin on festivities for the rest of day.

“Due to weather and safety concerns for the community the Geelong show has decided to close effective immediately for the evening and will prepare to reopen from 9.30am tomorrow morning,” a statement read.

“The team look forward to welcoming everyone over the weekend for a full program with the weather forecast looking clear.”
