The return of Australia Day celebrations will now be discussed among Surf Coast Shire Councillors, joining a growing trend of local governments re-evaluating their stance on January 26.

At the local council’s first meeting of the year this coming Tuesday night, two petitions will be tabled before a motion from Torquay Ward Councillor Rebecca Burke.

The motion will seek the council’s support and participation in events celebrating Australia Day each year, including citizenship ceremonies.

It comes after the Surf Coast Council voted to stop acknowledging Australia Day in September 2021, becoming one of the first councils across the local region to do so.

At the time, the decision was seen as an important step towards reconciliation, with the shire’s decision echoed by the City of Greater Geelong around 18 months later.

Geelong Council led the local charge in bringing back Australia Day celebrations following last year’s local government elections, and the appointment of new Mayor Stretch Kontelj.

Of the two petitions set to be tabled at the Surf Coast meeting next week, one calls for the shire to maintain its current stance on Australia Day, which has received 556 signatures.

The other, which supports council reinstating January 26 celebrations has been signed by 612 people.

“Australia Day is a day of national significance bringing communities together to celebrate our shared history, culture, and achievements,” Cr Burke stated in the meeting agenda rationale.

“It also serves as an emotional moment to acknowledge the diverse contributions of all Australians, including First Nations peoples, migrants, and those born here.”

The motion states that bringing back council celebrations will strengthen community unity and have economic and social benefits.

It will be voted on during Tuesday nights meeting at the Surf Coast Council Chambers in Torquay.
