Progress on the renewal of Winchelsea’s Mud Hut has stalled after ecologist’s found a microbat living in the set-to-be-demolished structure.
Surf Coast Shire Council has begun the construction phase of the project but partial demolition of the hut revealed the presence of the microbat.
Council’s contracted ecologist discovered the bat and a gecko during careful removal of sections of the structure and believes more microbats might be located in ridge capping which could not be removed due to the instability of the building.

Ecologist’s say the animals are likely to move on by September, with full demolition set to resume by then, or when the ecologist is satisfied the fauna is safe.
