Rail commuters are being urged not to try to walk to safety during unexpected shut-downs after two people were injured in Melbourne’s CBD.

The pair were among dozens of people who climbed down from train carriages onto tracks after a fight aboard a train brought inner-suburban services to a temporary standstill.

As police dealt with the incident, some frustrated commuters took matters into their own hands and tried to walk back to Southern Cross station.

It’s not clear how the two passengers were injured.

One man was taken to hospital after the brawl while the other was arrested.

Meantime V/Line has apologised after commuters on the Geelong line found themselves stranded at Wyndham Vale on Saturday afternoon.

Services ground to a halt at around midday thanks to a signal fault at Little River.

Passengers told the Geelong Advertiser they spent hours waiting for coaches to arrive so they could finish their journey to Geelong.
