There are concerns Australia may be entering a whooping cough epidemic with cases already passing 11,000 over the last six months.

That is well above the almost 2,500 cases reported in 2023 across Australia.

Geelong has had 40 reported cases so far this year, which is double the number for all of 2023.

There have been 31 cases reported in Wyndham, compared to three this time in 2023, and 20 for the whole year.

Authorities say the respiratory disease can be easily spread by adults who do not realise they have it.

They are concerns for young children, pregnant women and older people who may be vulnerable.

Locals who have not had a whooping cough vaccine in the last 10 years are being urged to get one.
