Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100.

Mr. Carter, a Democrat, served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He won the 1976 presidential election by defeating Republican Gerald Ford but lost his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Following his presidency, Mr. Carter dedicated himself to charitable and humanitarian work, earning widespread respect on a global scale.

In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

He passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday afternoon, local time.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Mr. Carter’s son, Chip Carter, in a statement.

Since February 2023, Mr. Carter had been in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia—the same small town where he was born and later managed a peanut farm before entering politics as governor of Georgia and eventually becoming President.

Mr. Carter was the oldest living former U.S. president and the longest-lived president in American history.
